tk070605-03 - EDA Failed to Initialize Properly on Windows XP SP2 (Error Code 0xC0000005)

Overview:

Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a feature on Windows XP SP2 that helps prevent damages from virus and other security threats that attack computers by running malicious codes from memory locations that only Windows and other programs should use. This type of threat damages one or more memory locations and can spread and harm other programs, files and even e-mail contacts. Since it is commonly encountered, Microsoft introduced Data Execution Prevention on SP2 of Windows XP. By default, Data Protection Execution is turned on for Windows programs and services only. However, to gain control of the system the second option can be chosen. In this case, DEP will work for ALL programs and services of the system. However, some programs are known to generate problems that even though they are legitimate, will fail to initialize properly.

SYMPTOM:

E-Disk® Analyzer (EDA) will not run prompting error message, “EDA failed to initialize properly on Windows XP (error code 0xC0000005)”.

SOLUTION:

The DEP is set to the second option. In this case, DEP has to be configured to ignore EDA. To do this, perform the following steps:

   1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
   2. On the Advanced tab under Performance, click Settings.
   3. On the Data Execution Prevention tab, click on “Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select”.

   4. Click “Add”. Open window will prompt.
   5. Browse through the location of the E Disk® Analyzer (EDA) executable file.

For ATA: C:\Edisk\Edisk_analyzercustomer\exec\bitmicro\eda_customer_atawin98.exe
For Legacy SCSI: C:\Edisk\Edisk_analyzercustomer\exec\bitmicro\eda_customer_scsi.exe

   6. Click on Apply, then OK twice.

   7. Restart the system.
